Three to four items is the sweet spot

Pick one thing to play with, one thing to make or draw with, and one small treat. A fourth item can tie into the theme. Anything beyond that starts to feel like filler and pushes your per-bag cost up without changing how the bag is received.

Choose by age, not by theme

Theme colors are easy to match later. Age fit is what determines whether an item gets used.

• Ages 2–4: chunky crayons, stickers, bubbles — nothing with small parts
• Ages 5–7: mini craft kits, fidget toys, sidewalk chalk, temporary tattoos
• Ages 8–12: puzzle cubes, notebooks, keychains, card games
• Mixed ages: stickers and snacks work across the whole range

Buy in bulk, split across bags

Pre-made favor sets cost the most per child. Buying a single multipack of one good item and dividing it across bags almost always beats them on both price and quality. Order two to three weeks ahead so you're not paying for rushed shipping.

Things to skip

Loose confetti, anything that needs batteries you have to supply, candy with common allergens, and toys that break before the guests get to the car. If you wouldn't want it coming into your own house, leave it out.
